This trophy was awarded to Tony Gwynn for leading the National League with 17 RBIs during the month of July 1986. While Gwynn is best remembered for his unmatched consistency and batting titles, this piece highlights a specific month when he paired elite contact hitting with timely run production—driving in more runs than any player in the league over that stretch.

July 1986 came in the middle of one of Gwynn’s most balanced campaigns. He finished the season with 211 hits (most in the National League), a .329 batting average, and 107 runs scored (tied for the NL lead), further demonstrating how his offensive game extended beyond just pure average. In fact, the 1986 season is one of just five in his career where he topped 100 runs, and one of only three with 200+ hits and 100+ runs in the same year.

While Gwynn never chased home runs, his ability to produce runs was quietly elite—particularly when given opportunities with men on base. This July award captures one of those flashes. Across his 20-year Hall of Fame career, he only had nine months with 20+ RBIs, and July 1986 stands out as the only time he led the league for a full month.
