This 1997 Silver Slugger Award was the seventh and final Silver Slugger Tony Gwynn earned during his legendary career. Each year, the Silver Slugger is awarded to the best offensive player at each position in Major League Baseball. Gwynn, as an outfielder for the San Diego Padres, claimed this honor during what was one of his finest statistical seasons. In 1997, Gwynn hit an astounding .372—his highest batting average in a full season—along with a career-high 220 hits, 17 home runs, and 119 RBIs, marking his highest-ever single-season RBI total. His only higher batting average came during the strike-shortened 1994 season. His dominance at the plate led the league in both hits and batting average, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest hitters of all time.
