In 1987, Gwynn claimed his second career Gold Glove Award, establishing himself as one of the top defensive outfielders in the game.

Playing right field for the San Diego Padres, Gwynn finished the season with a .981 fielding percentage, ranking among the top National League right fielders in putouts, assists, and fielding percentage. His strong arm and defensive awareness allowed him to make crucial plays, while his reliable glove secured outs with consistency. This award came during Gwynn's formidable reign as a Gold Glove winner, earning five of these prestigious honors between 1986 and 1991.

While Tony Gwynn is best known for his batting titles and offensive prowess, his defense in right field during the late 1980s was equally vital to his Hall of Fame career. His 1987 season further cemented his status as a complete player, excelling in all aspects of the game.
