Description

1" Quantegy 499 Grand Master Gold analog reel for “Tell It Like It Is,” recorded by Snoop Dogg at Electric Lady Studios on August 21, 2002. The reel contains clean, instrumental, and a cappella versions of the track—standard configurations prepared for promo servicing and radio play through Priority Records.

The session was engineered by Pat Viala and produced by C-Zer (credited here as CZ CPTZ), during a period when Snoop was reestablishing his creative independence following his time with No Limit Records. “Tell It Like It Is” surfaced through underground circulation and DJ promo channels but was never formally released on a studio album. Like many unreleased or white-label era tracks from this time, it reflects a prolific and transitional stretch in Snoop's catalog, where even non-album cuts carried his signature delivery and production sensibilities.

The reel originated at Electric Lady Studios, the iconic New York facility built to Jimi Hendrix’s specifications in 1970. Known for its vibrant acoustics and artist-first design, Electric Lady has hosted landmark sessions across decades—from Stevie Wonder and Patti Smith to A Tribe Called Quest, D’Angelo, and Kendrick Lamar. Snoop’s recording there underscores the national reach of his studio presence in the early 2000s. The included studio tracking sheet confirms all session details—date, engineer, assistant, producer, and tape configuration—while the reel itself bears matching handwritten annotations.

Analog masters like this were typically stored internally or erased for reuse. Surviving studio reels containing clean, instrumental, and a cappella takes from a documented session—especially at Electric Lady—are rare. This reel offers direct provenance from the artist and physical proof of a confirmed session with one of hip-hop’s most enduring voices.\
