Nominated for Best Costume Design at the 2025 Academy Awards, Gladiator II became a global box office smash, grossing nearly $500 million and cementing itself as one of Paramount's highest-grossing films of all time. It also ranks among the top 30 highest-grossing R-rated movies in history.

Film-used regal robe and tunic ensemble worn in Gladiator II by Macrinus, a former slave who has ascended to a formidable power broker and arms dealer in Ancient Rome. Macrinus' journey from enslavement to one of the empire's most influential figures is marked by his strategic acumen and ruthless ambition. He supplies weapons, food, and oil to Rome's legions, effectively controlling the empire's military resources. Beyond his commercial enterprises, Macrinus maintains a stable of gladiators, orchestrating brutal spectacles in the Colosseum to entertain the masses and manipulate political currents. His interactions with the co-emperors, Caracalla and Geta, reveal his deep entanglement in the highest echelons of power as he maneuvers to position himself at the pinnacle of Roman society.

His presence looms over Gladiator II's narrative, acting as both a mentor and a captor to Lucius Verus, a Numidian leader (known as Hanno), captured during the film’s opening battle against the Romans and forced into slavery. Stripped of his freedom and identity, Lucius is thrown into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat, where Macrinus sees both an opportunity and a threat. Under the guise of guidance, Macrinus trains Lucius as a gladiator, testing his limits and instilling in him the cold pragmatism required to survive in a world ruled by blood and betrayal. But while he refines Lucius into a warrior, he also tightens his grip, using him as a pawn in a larger game to destabilize Rome’s leadership and position himself at the center of its power structure. Their dynamic is one of tension, manipulation, and rebellion—a battle of wills that defines the heart of the film.

This ensemble first appears in the intense gladiatorial battle between Hanno and the ferocious baboons, a moment that showcases the cruelty of Rome's entertainment and the calculated nature of Macrinus, who watches from above, assessing strength, exploiting weakness, and placing his bets on the future.

- Tunic: A red and purple geometric print, mirroring the duality of Macrinus—both a self-made warrior and a master of political strategy.

- Robe: A deep green outer robe with elaborate gold embroidery, symbolizing his immense wealth, control over Rome’s war economy, and status as an unseen architect of power.

As the film unfolds, Macrinus' schemes set the stage for violent betrayals, shifting allegiances, and Rome's inevitable reckoning. Worn in one of the most visually arresting and pivotal moments in Gladiator II, this ensemble is a defining piece of its Academy Award-nominated costume design, embodying the ambition, deception, and raw power that drive the film's narrative.
