Description

News broke on January 9, 2007 that Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. had been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the following morning's San Diego Union-Tribune marked the moment with a front page headlined "The Masterstroke: After 20 years of batting artistry, Tony Gwynn connects again." Gwynn appeared on 97.61 percent of ballots cast, one of the highest vote totals in Hall of Fame history to that point, trailing only Ripken's 98.53 percent within that same induction class.

Numbered 3 of 3 in the paper's UT Cover Classics series, this reproduction preserves that front page as it appeared on newsstands the day San Diego celebrated the news, complete with coverage of Gwynn's press conference at Petco Park and his response that the honor felt like "validation" for a career spent entirely with the Padres. Kept among his personal belongings, it captures the exact morning his Cooperstown induction became official.
