Official baseball from the 1998 MLB All-Star Game, hosted for the first time at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. In his 14th career All-Star selection and second-to-last appearance, Tony Gwynn batted second for the National League and went 1-for-3. His single to center field in the bottom of the third inning drove in Walt Weiss and Larry Walker, accounting for two RBIs.
The American League ultimately won the high-scoring contest 13–8, but Gwynn’s performance was a reminder of his trademark ability to produce in elite competition. The game brought together many of the era’s biggest stars and offered fans in Colorado a rare chance to see “Mr. Padre” in the Midsummer Classic.
