On August 24, 1985, Tony Gwynn recorded the 509th hit of his Major League career during a matchup against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. It was his second hit of the game, coming in the eighth inning with a runner on base. Gwynn singled to center field off Ron Darling, continuing his strong showing at the plate despite the Padres ultimately falling 5-1. Gwynn went 2-for-4 on the day, further reinforcing his reputation for consistent contact and poise against top-tier pitching.
