Baseball from Tony Gwynn’s 1,338th career hit, recorded on September 15, 1989 in a road game against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. Facing left-hander Bob Knepper, Gwynn singled as part of a Padres offense that secured a 5–3 victory.
The at-bat added to Gwynn’s long history of success against Knepper, whom he hit .373 against over 74 career plate appearances, striking out only twice. This milestone came during the 1989 season in which Gwynn led the National League in batting average (.336) and hits (203), won both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards, and earned All-Star honors.
