Description

Baseball from Tony Gwynn’s 1,332nd career hit, recorded on September 4, 1989 against the Atlanta Braves at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium. In the top of the first inning, Gwynn pulled a ground ball single to right field off Joe Boever, then scored on a two-run home run by Jack Clark. The early offense proved pivotal in a back-and-forth game that ended in a 10–9 Padres victory.

The hit was part of a standout 1989 season in which Gwynn captured both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards, led the National League in batting average (.336) and hits (203), and earned All-Star honors. It was a year that reflected not only his mastery at the plate but also his defensive excellence in the field.
