Baseball from Tony Gwynn’s 1,328th career hit, recorded on September 3, 1989 at Jack Murphy Stadium against the Philadelphia Phillies. In the bottom of the first inning, Gwynn lined a double to right field off Dennis Cook and later scored on a single by Jack Clark. The early run helped set the tone in a 9–5 San Diego victory.
The hit was part of a season in which Gwynn led the National League with a .336 batting average and 203 hits, capturing his fourth career batting title. His consistency and ability to deliver in key moments reinforced his reputation as one of the most complete hitters in baseball history.
