Presented to DJ Yella, this UK silver sales award commemorates the sale of over 60,000 copies of Straight Outta Compton in the United Kingdom. Issued by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the plaque reflects the album’s distribution through Island Records’ 4th + Broadway imprint, which helped bring N.W.A.’s message across the Atlantic during a time when U.S. hip-hop rarely crossed over internationally.

Originally released in 1988, Straight Outta Compton marked the debut studio album from N.W.A. and introduced the world to a new level of raw, unfiltered reality rap. Produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, and featuring lyrics from Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren, and The D.O.C., the album ignited widespread controversy and influence. It became a lightning rod for debates on censorship and free speech, especially following the release of “F**k tha Police,” which prompted a warning letter from the FBI. Despite being banned from many mainstream radio stations, the record achieved massive commercial success, going multi-platinum in the U.S. and ultimately earning international certifications like this UK award.

The plaque features a UK flag emblem, the 4th + Broadway logo, and a 12" vinyl display on a blue velvet background alongside the album artwork. It represents both the historic global reach of the record and DJ Yella’s foundational role in its production. DJ Yella's signature appears on the outside of the glass.
