Handcrafted Victoire Leather Mitts by Wahsontahawi Stacey

These handcrafted leather mitts were created by Wahsontahawi Stacey, a Mohawk artist from Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory whose work reflects a deep connection to family, community, and everyday creativity.

Wahsontahawi balances full-time work while raising her four children and continuing to nurture her passion for creating. Her artistic practice includes sewing, beading, leatherwork, basket-making, and moccasin making. Much of her work is inspired by the desire to create meaningful and practical pieces for the people around her, blending function with personal and cultural expression.

The mitts feature soft yellow leather paired with a deep burgundy fabric cuff embroidered with the Victoire crest in beadwork. The crest references Montréal’s professional women’s hockey team and celebrates the growth and recognition of women’s sport. The use of contrasting materials and colors highlights both the craftsmanship of the piece and the pride associated with the team it represents.

Combining warmth, durability, and careful hand construction, the mitts reflect the time, care, and skill Wahsontahawi brings to the items she creates for her family and community. Pieces like these also represent the quiet strength and dedication of many Indigenous women who continue to keep creative traditions alive within their homes and families.

Proceeds from the auction of this item will support the development of a new Arts and Cultural Building in Kahnawà:ke, which will provide a dedicated space for cultural programming, artistic expression, and community gathering.
