Description
On September 16, 1987, Tony Gwynn recorded his 200th hit of the season in a game against the Houston Astros. The milestone came on a triple—his 13th of the year, a total that tied the Padres single-season franchise record (equaled only once, by Dave Roberts in 2006). Gwynn went 2-for-5 in the game, continuing a torrid offensive stretch that powered a career-high 218-hit campaign. He finished the season with a .370 batting average, securing his second National League batting title. Gwynn also stole 56 bases that year, becoming the first National League player in history to hit .370 and steal at least 50 bases in the same season—an unprecedented combination of speed and contact hitting that remains unmatched in the modern era.
