Facing Houston Astros pitcher Donne Wall in the third inning, Gwynn drove the ball deep to right field for the milestone blast. The homer was part of his most prolific power season, as he went on to hit a career-high 17 home runs in 1997.
The game remained tied into extra innings before Gwynn—who had reached base—scored the winning run on a Scott Livingstone single through the familiar “5.5 hole.” Gwynn finished his career with 135 home runs, a testament to his gap-to-gap hitting approach and ability to deliver power when the moment called for it.
